The UK Foreign Office has added eleven new countries to its official warning register regarding the risks of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.

The revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following multiple notable cases including the tragic death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol often used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

But in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Guidance for Tourists

Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer said that each tourist should be aware of the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"If you're consuming alcohol overseas, opt for trusted places and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," the minister advised.

"In case something feels off, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or vision problems – get medical help fast."

The full roster of countries noted as posing a risk of methanol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
