The Liverpool legend in the running for Glasgow Rangers comeback after Russell Martin is sacked.

The Anfield icon is under serious review for a surprise reappointment to the Scottish giants following the confirmed sacking of manager Russell Martin.

The manager's ill-fated time in charge concludes

Martin's troubled period in Glasgow concluded with the manager departing the Falkirk Stadium via a rear entrance and a vehicle on standby after a share of the points which left the Glasgow side eleven points adrift from the summit of the premier division after just seven matches.

Furious fans had surrounded the Rangers team bus in the stadium location, showing their discontent.

Rangers board unwilling to let go of the manager

The club directors had been hesitant to let go of the former Swansea boss, who was only brought in in June, despite vociferous objections from supporters.

However, there was an understanding that the 39-year-old’s role had become untenable.

The team have secured just a single victory of their Premiership matches to date, which has been coupled with poor performances in Europe.

Collectively, the manager won only five of 17 competitive matches, with a uninspiring, confused brand of football that earned him few friends.

“Even though changeovers require some time, results have failed to reach the club’s expectations,” said a Rangers statement on the weekend.

“Deputy manager the assistant, and first-team coach Williamson, will also be moving on. Russell and his coaching team have given their all throughout their tenure. We thank them for their dedication and hope for the best for the future.”

Steven Gerrard secured the championship with the club

The Liverpool legend won the title with the Ibrox side in 2020-21, their lone triumph since that year.

His achievements in the Scottish league before then, alongside setbacks at the Birmingham club, brings doubts about his leadership skills.

Yet he is greatly respected by the very set of fans the team desperately need back on side.

The reappointment of the Liverpool icon, who last managed in the Middle East, would be widely welcomed.

The manager will also be aware of what limited opportunities he has to be a gaffer in major divisions.

Martin’s exit will heighten focus on the sporting director

The coaching change will heighten focus on Kevin Thelwell, the Ibrox director.

He had been very backing of the manager while publicly revealing a net spend of £20m in the summer window.

The ex-manager had signed a three-year contract.

His earlier positions

The coach, who had formerly managed the Dons and the Welsh club, managed the south coast club to elevation to the top flight in 2024 after being appointed the earlier window.

He was let go last winter after the Saints won only one of their initial 16 matches.

He was named the interim boss's successor in the summer, after the temporary manager had taken over from the sacked Philippe Clement in February.
