Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's ODI Lineup Versus Team India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw receiving a shock selection.

Performance Issues Result in Exclusion

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international squad following scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.

Labuschagne has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia seek a solution to their opening batting issues.

Bowling Returns and Fitness News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.

Squad Selection Strategy and Fixtures

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
